Holiday Hours, Black Friday Sale and a Few Photos

Let's just say we very UNSUCCESSFULLY tried! Lillie has NOT been into taking pictures lately so I haven't even bothered trying these past few weeks. An Up and Down Kind of Day plus The Ballet Slippers and Invitations for Lillian Annabel's Birthday Party

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Well, it has indeed been an up and down kind of day. As many of you know our tutus (and some of our children's clothing) often disappear from our Etsy shop for a week or so at a time due to health issues with my grandfather and Uncle Bob (both of whom are in their 80's and suffering from advanced Alzheimer's and many other health issues). My mom and dad help take care of them (my Uncle Bob is my Gramp's brother who never married or had children so he always was like a second father to my mom and a second grandfather to us) so when they are in the hospital my mom has to remove the tutus from our Etsy shop until things are better. Earlier this week we had to take the tutus down because my grandfather went in for surgery. He ended up in the Intensive Care Unit afterward and has been there all week. Along with some other complications he had developed pneumonia and was having some serious heart troubles. Then this morning my Uncle Bob took a bad fall and broke two ribs and had to be rushed to the ER. While there, they discovered he also had pneumonia. So now both of them are in the hospital and neither of them are doing well. I am not telling you all this to be depressing (I know you probably aren't coming on this blog to read depressing news) but I just wanted to let you know that at this time it is impossible to know when the tutus will be back up in our shop, and more importantly to ask for your prayers for my Gramp, Uncle Bob, and for my parents.</div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Okay and now onto something a bit more lighthearted! Here are the ballet slippers and invitations I have been working on for Lillie's party. I only have two slippers left to add ribbon to and then I am done with those. Thank goodness! And I will never be attempting a project like that again - they were a major pain in the neck!  For her party they will be hanging from two different branches that will be covered in tiny white lights but for now I will just show you one hanging from my branch in my dining room (which is about to get decked out for Christmas later tonight....or at least I hope I can get to it). I made sixteen slippers. Twelve to hang from the branches in honor of the whole "Twelve Dancing Princesses'" theme, and two sets of two to use elsewhere. </div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div align="center" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The total cost was only $5.50. I used fabric I already had for the main part of the slipper and then had to buy two rolls of ribbon for the ties at 50 cents a roll and then I paid $4.50 for an online pattern for the shoes off of Etsy. I had to improvise it a bit but it was nice to have something to go off of. My goal is to spend under $50 on her party and so far so good. I think I am at around $35 or so (for paper, glitter, ribbon and a little bit of candy and some fancy sprinkles and toppings for her cake and cupcakes) and I don't have much left to get. A Few More Pillows and a Thanksgiving Giveaway!

<div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Ahh - it's been a wee bit crazy here lately. Our shop has been quite busy so we have been working away trying to get everything shipped out as quickly as possible! (The knit hats are running about two weeks out but most everything else we have been able to get shipped within two to three days and hope to be able to continue that through the holiday season). While Lillie naps and sleeps I work, but when she is awake I don't do any Dear Lillie work except for a handful of e-mails and convos when she is busy playing. One thing that is so nice about this age is that she is starting to get really into "projects" so therefore while she is awake she and I have been busy working on making more pillows and decorating for Christmas. Last year I didn't get anything done because she wasn't much of a "helper" yet. Her favorite phrase now is, "Hep please Mommy?" She hasn't quite mastered the L in help yet. However, as much fun as it is being able to do all of these Christmas projects with her, I have discovered it doesn't just take twice as long - it takes like ten times as long! I showed restraint for a few days and then gave in and started doing some Christmas decorating several days ago. Well, with Lillie as my helper it is taking forever! We are only probably about a quarter of the way done.  I am so glad now that we did start early - I think we will be lucky to have everything up and ready by mid December at this rate! It took us two afternoons to get the greenery up on the mantle and put the pine cones in the buckets and bowls - I think those projects normally take me about twenty minutes. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Anyway, here are a few of the projects we have been working on. First, with the leftover burlap from the stockings I decided to recover three old pillows. (I bought three yards of burlap at $3.99 a yard, so I am pretty excited that for just under twelve dollars we were able to make five stockings and three new pillows and I still have a little left over for a few other projects I have in mind!) First, we made two matching burlap pillows for our family room to recover the furry ones I had on my wingback chairs that I have been wanting to replace since we moved here! I am so excited to finally have them gone. We just sewed a basic square with one of those backs that lets you slide the pillow forms in and out. Then we made ruffles out of the same muslin that we used for the stockings. After we made the ruffles I just glued them onto the pillows instead of sewing them. (I figured with Lillie as my helper there was no way that we were going to get them sewed on straight so I distracted her and just quickly glue gunned them on there - glue guns are seriously the best invention ever!) I placed the ruffles towards the right side of the pillows for an asymmetrical look. You can't really tell in the pictures because they are so close up, but when I take more pictures later of the whole room once we are finished decorating it you will be able to see that better. This one has a more symmetrical look and I placed one ruffle on each side of the pillow and then temporarily placed a chocolate ribbon on the right ruffle. I felt like they needed a little something more. Now I like how they look next to the ruffled/ribbon ones. Andrea Hallett and a "Sweet" Little Gift!

Around a year or so ago I stumbled across a website that I absolutely fell in love with: <a href="http://www.andreahallettphotography.com/">Andrea Hallett Photography</a>. I don't know that I have ever seen a photographer's work that so completely took my breath away. Every photo I looked at was so beautiful and ethereal yet so natural too! I don't even know how much time I wasted that first day browsing through her website and blog. For the past year every few weeks or so I would head over just to admire the beauty. A couple of months ago, Andrea placed an order for several items from our store. When I saw her name I got so excited - I called my mom and sisters and told them that there was this photographer whose site I had been stalking for a year and she had actually bought some stuff from us! We started conversing back and forth and I am super excited that she is going to shoot some of our new items this spring! I can't wait. I also really want her to photograph our new little munchkin and Lillie when the new wee one arrives. I haven't ever had any professional photos taken of Lillie (although I know that Lillie certainly isn't lacking in having her photo taken - haha! It's just never been by a real photographer), so I think it would be so much fun to have Andrea shoot Lillie and our new little girl! <br /><br />Anyway, I am getting sidetracked as usual. Many of these shops were using the templates featuring the scripted words with that I freehanded on items they were selling. Because of this, we have chosen to remove our free templates from this page. I really hate to do this, but unfortunately not everyone was willing to comply with what we thought was a fairly basic request that the templates just be used for personal use or gifts. Another Quick Christmas Project and the Winner of the Briar Hat!

Hello Everyone! I hope you all are having a great week! So, I have been in project mode lately and after finishing up the pillows got to work on the burlap stockings, which I have pictures of posted below. First, though, I want to say thanks for all your sweet comments and e-mails about the pillows. They seriously were incredibly easy to do and I think only took me about an hour or so. I LOVE blogs that give tutorials. In fact, I am addicted to them - haha! If I had any clue as to what I was doing I would do tutorials for when I do easy projects like that. We have been asked before about that and the reason I haven't done them isn't because I don't want to. I love sharing ideas. I get so inspired by so many of you out there and love how so many of you so willingly show how you created things and share your sources -  it is one of my favorite things about discovering "blogland" - and certainly never would mind showing you how we did something. However, I normally am just "winging it" and making do as I go so I am not sure I would be very good at doing a tutorial. As my family can attest, whenever I am trying to explain something to them or they are trying to explain a project to me we often just end up exasperatedly saying "I will just SHOW you next time I see you" seeing how describing a project is not one of our areas of expertise! I do plan on making a few more of them and if I do I will try to take pictures as I go and maybe attempt to do a tutorial, but only if I can make it make sense and not sound completely stupid! For those who wondered what font it was - it really was just my handwriting - I didn't look at anything and just swirled as I went. I think you could get a stencil at Michael's or some other craft store, though and easily get the same effect and it would probably look a lot neater!<br /><br />Monday night before I got to work on my Dear Lillie sewing I decided to make some new stockings. I wanted to make a new one for the baby and figured why not make some new ones for all of us. I had gotten some burlap for $3.99  a yard and a few buttons to play around with. I used an old stocking to trace out on the burlap and then cut out five sets of stockings. (I messed up on the first one so figured I would use that for an extra one and cut out four more). As soon as I started sewing Lillie woke up - arghhh! Poor thing has been sick a bunch lately. She had strep throat a couple of weeks ago and was finally better from that and came down with a horrible cold which has made sleeping impossible for her. Anyway, she was so stuffed and we couldn't get her to calm down and breathe so we just let her come downstairs for a bit. She, of course, wanted to "help". That is her new favorite phrase, "Help please, Mommy?" So, Lillie actually helped sew these. I let her press the "button", as she called it, on the sewing machine and away we went. After she helped sew the burlap together we put her back to bed and made the ruffles. I had a lot of Etsy work to do that night, though and picked up after that and then finished up last night by attaching the ruffles and buttons and then Lillie helped this afternoon when we put them on the mantle so we could take a few photos. She seemed very excited that she had helped make them! Once I put them up for real in a couple of weeks I will take some pictures where you can see the whole mantel.
